Locus Teamhouse

International Week

Locus Workspace is an independent coworking space in Prague that brings together a diverse community of freelancers, remote workers, and creatives. The current location encourages everyday interaction through its cosy layout, making it easy for members to meet, talk, and feel a sense community. As Locus Workspace prepares to open a second location: the Locus Teamhouse, a new challenge arises. Accommodating small teams may affect the open and personal atmosphere that defines the workspace. This project looks at how a growing coworking space can support collaboration, creativity, and community, while making sure that both individuals and teams feel connected and included.

Experience

Going to Prague with our group was an amazing experience, from the planning stage all the way through our stay. Arriving a couple of days before the project began gave us time to explore the city, discover great places to eat, enjoy the Christmas markets and relax back at our accommodation. Ties and I shared a room that quickly became our living room, where we played pool, watched some Molletje and got to know our classmates on a more personal level.

Hearing who the client was and what our assignment would be got me really excited. As someone who freelances and enjoys working while traveling, I immediately connected with the idea of this community. My company, iT-Traveler, felt like it belonged there, and I could easily picture myself working in the space while exploring the city.

One of the highlights was going to Prague’s Jazz Republic with the group and coaches. The live music, the atmosphere, and a few beers made it a fun and memorable evening.

Solution

When developing our solutions, we first tried to understand what made Locus special and what members truly enjoyed about working there. From the moment we were introduced, it was clear that the community feeling was strong, with member led activities and an inviting atmosphere. During our interviews, it quickly became obvious that members were happy to share their experiences. In fact, it was a first for our group to have almost no effort finding participants. Members just came up to us naturally to talk about what they loved about Locus.

We distilled these insights, combined them with our personas, desk research, and a book about different co-working spaces worldwide provided by Mathias, and identified four key themes to guide the new Locus Teamhouse: a space that works, an environment that energizes, a community that connects, and tools that empower. Together our team created five posters, one general poster and four that explored each theme in more detail, to guide the design of the new space.

To capture our experiences and share our process, we also made a video documenting our time in Prague and the steps we took to design the future space (you can view it here).

To present our findings to the client, we set up an experience room with the posters displayed alongside images from our process and moodboards of possibilities. Connected together with red string. We opened the session by showing our video, and seeing the client’s excitement about what we had created in just one week was very rewarding.

My role & impact

In this project, I contributed to exploring how teams could be integrated into the new Locus Teamhouse without losing the strong community feeling that defines the space. Together with our team, I participated in ideation and Co-Design sessions to find different opportunities for balancing the needs of teams with the open and collaborative feeling of the workspace.

I also took the lead in creating the designs for the posters and matching illustrations that communicated the key themes. Making sure each concept could be understood at a glance. During the final exhibition, I welcomed the members and presented our solution, guiding them through the posters and explaining our process.
